Munnar

Munnar is a small town of the southern state of Kerala in India. The name is most often used to refer to the whole tourist area, of which the town forms a part. It is located at the confluence of the mountain streams Muthirappuzha, Chanduvarai and Kundala. It is surrounded by wild jungles and is wet and cold for most of the year. Though part of Kerala state, Tamil workers brought from Tamilnadu and their successors are now majority in Munnar.

Nandi Hills

Nandidrug or Nandidurg is a hill fortress of southern India, in the Kolar District of Karnataka state. It is 4851 ft. (1478 meters) above sea level. Nandidrug hill, known commonly as Nandi Hills, is the source of the Penner and Ponnaiyar rivers. Nandi Hills gets its name from an ancient Nandi temple situated on this hill. This temple has a thousand year old sculpture of Nandi. An ancient lord Shiva and Parvati temple also adorns this hill.

Ooty

Ooty, short for Ootacamund (an anglicized name for Udhagamandalam), is a popular hill resort in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India. The name Udhagamandalam is derived from the TODA word "othakal-mund" which means "house in mountains". Ooty stands at 7,347 feet above sea level in the Nilgiri mountain range. It was founded in the 19th century by the British, and served as the summer headquarters of the Madras Presidency (Madras is now Chennai).

Shillong

Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya, one of the smaller states in India. It is also the district headquarters of East Khasi Hills District and is situated at an altitude of 4,908 ft (1,496 m) above sea level. The city has a population of approx. 2,360,069 according to the 2001 census. Shillong has steadily grown in size and significance in its own traditional way from a mere village as it used to be when it was made the new civil station of Khasi and Jaintia Hills in 1864 by British. It remained the summer capital of Eastern Bengal and Assam for many years.

Darjeeling

Kalimpong

Kalimpong is a hill station (a hill town) nestled in the Shiwalik Hills (or Lower Himalaya) in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is located at 27.06° N 88.47° E at an average elevation of 1,247 m (4,100 feet). The town is the headquarters of the Kalimpong subdivision, a part of the district of Darjeeling. A major forward base of the Indian Army is located on the outskirts of the town.

Tawang

Tawang district is located in north-western Arunachal Pradesh in India. The People's Republic of China claims sovereignty over the area as part of Cuona district in Shannan Prefecture (Tibet Autonomous Region), while India claims it as part of the state of Arunachal Pradesh.The inhabitants of the districts are all of Monpa tribes except Shyo village, which is dominated by people of Tibetan origin. The Monpas belong to Mongoloid stock, are well built, and fair in complexion. Their houses are built with stones and timbers. Agriculture and Animal Husbandry are the fundamental means of the Monpas occupation.

Khandala

Khandala is a hill station in the Western Ghats in the state of Maharashtra, India, about three kilometres from Lonavala and seven kilometers from Karjat. Khandala is located at one (top) end the Bhor Ghat, a major ghat (meaning valley in Marathi) on the road link between the Deccan Plateau and the Konkan plain. The ghat carries an extensive amount of road and rail traffic. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the main link between the major cities of Mumbai and Pune, passes through Khandala.

Lonavala

Lonavala or Lonavla is a hill station in the western state of Maharashtra in India. It is about 64 km away from the city of Pune and 96 km away from the city Mumbai. It is famous throughout India for the hard candy sweet known as Chikki and is also a major stop on the rail line connecting Mumbai and Pune. It is also an important town on the Mumbai-Pune road link. Both the Mumbai-Pune Expressway as well as the Mumbai-Pune highway pass through Lonavala. Lonavala comes to life during the monsoon season as the countryside turns lush green with waterfalls and ponds.

Mahabaleshwar

Mahabaleshwar, "The Queen of Hill Stations", served as the summer capital of Bombay province during the British Raj, and today is a popular holiday resort and honeymoon spot. The area is also an important pilgrimage site for Hindus, and is the site of the Mahabaleshwar Temple. Mahabaleshwar comprises of three villages, Malcolm Peth, Old "Kshetra" Mahabaleshwar and part of the Shindola village. The first historical mention of Mahabaleshwar dates back to year 1215 when the King Singhan of Deogiri visited Old Mahabaleshwar. Present Mahabaleshwar came into existence in the year 1829-30 and from old records is mentioned as Malcolm Peth, but in practise today it is known as Mahabaleshwar.

Panchgani

Panchgani, often referred to as the Mecca of Maharashtra, is a small hill-station in the state of Maharashtra, India. It is located amidst five small hills, from which it derives its name (panch in marathi means five). All these 5 hills are topped by a volcanic plateau which is the second highest in Asia after the Tibetan plateau. These plateaus are known in the local term as "Table Land". These plateau's are part of the Deccan plateau and were raised by the pressure between the earth plates.

Pachmarhi

Pachmarhi is a hill station in Madhya Pradesh state of central India. It is widely known as " Satpura ki Rani", situated at a height of 3500 ft. in a valley of the Satpura Range in Hoshangabad district, 45 kilometres by road from Piparia station on the Indian Railways. Piparia is on the Itarsi Jabalpur train line 2 hrs Train run from Jabalpur. All the trains on this line pass through Piparia, but only a few halt here.

Chail

Chail is an Indian hill station and hiking area. It is situated 43 km away from Shilma in Himachal Pradesh, India. Chail offers views of the Himalayan mountains. In the Chail Wildlife Sanctuary there is a collection of rare birds and deer. There are also hiking trails through unpopulated areas. The largest hotel is the Palace Hotel built in 1891 and later purchased by a tourism company in 1972. Gangotri

Gangotri is a town and a nagar panchayat in Uttarkashi district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. It is a Hindu pilgrim town on the banks of the river Bhagirathi. It is on the Greater Himalayan Range, at a height of 10,100 ft. It is the man's requirememt to worship the Gods or tos fulfill his desire for adventure, Gangotri is an ideal location. Gangotri, the origin of the sacred river Ganges, attracts tourists in huge numbers every season. Kullu

Kullu is the capital town of the Kullu district, in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is located on the banks of the Beas River in the Kullu Valley about ten kilometres north of the airport at Bhuntar. In the nearby Lug valley are located the main forest contractors who have been extracting timber from the forests for the last 150 years and continue to do so today. The weather in Kullu is alpine. Summers (April-June) are mild and winters are cold (November-February). It experiences southwestern monsoon rains in July-September.

Manali

Manali is a popular Himalayan tourist destination and accounts for nearly a quarter of all tourist arrivals in Himachal Pradesh. It is visited by many trekkers who follow the hashish trail. Mount Abu

Mount Abu pronunciation (help·info) is the highest peak in the Aravalli Range of Rajasthan state in western India. It is located in Sirohi district. The mountain forms a distinct rocky plateau 22km long by 9 km wide. The highest peak on the mountain is Guru Shikhar, at 1722 meters above sea level. It is referred to as 'an oasis in the desert', as its heights are home to rivers, lakes, waterfalls and evergreen forests.
